Not many regions can pride themselves on having a free tourist guide and map specifically for their gay visitors. But the Øresund region is one of them. Check the guide out onscreen or download it.

The free map and gay guide Copenhagen Øresund 2008/2009, also entitled "Come closer", shows many places of interest for gays - such as accommodation, bars, beaches, restaurants, saunas and shopping in Copenhagen as well as in Malmö across the sound in Sweden.

- With this unique guide we are looking forward to welcoming gay visitors from all over the world by introducing them to great places in the Øresund region. To help visitors explore the region, we have also included handy maps of Copenhagen, Malmö and the Øresund region, says Project Manager Lene Wittek-Møller, Copehagen/Øresund.

Here is where to get it

In association with Copenhagen Gay Life the Copenhagen/Øresund project has financed the free guide in 50,000 copies. 10,000 copies will, thanks to Copenhagen/Øresund, be distributed through VisitDenmark's tourist offices in USA, Spain, Italy and Germany, and of course it will be available in bars and cafés around Copenhagen and Malmö as well as in the tourist information offices in Copenhagen and Malmö.

Welcome 

Come closer. Come closer in a region where closeness and human touch is the standard by which everything is measured. Copenhagen/Øresund is the southern most part of Scandinavia comprising southern Sweden and the eastern part of Denmark linked by the impressive Øresund Bridge.

It starts in the morning while you are having brunch at a charming café as you and Copenhagen are waking up, and it continues with shopping in cutting edge designer shops and little esoteric second hand boutiques. Museums boasting world-class collections compete for your attention with the many city parks - but weather permitting you might prefer a swim in the clear cool water of Havnebadet - a harbour pool just 2 minutes away from the city centre. Everything is conveniently within reach. And when you have finished investigating Copenhagen, you just jump on the train to Malmö to let the adventure continue. 

At Night

But you might say that Copenhagen and Malmö does not really shine until nightfall. Bars, clubs, concert venues and discos make the narrow alleys in both cities come alive and give you the opportunity to get really close to the locals and their way of life. The party continues well into the morning with temptations of every kind! 

Anytime 

The Øresund Region has something to offer all senses and tastes all the year round. July and August are the warmest months, but any time of year the gay community will be happy to welcome you to their big city renowned for its easy-going and laid-back life style. 

The Øresund Region

Once upon a time there was a Kingdom called Denmark stretching from the borders of Russia in the East to the shores of Jutland in the West. Nowadays the size of Denmark is more modest. But even if Skåne is now the southern most part of The Kingdom of Sweden the Øresund Region is still a very homogenous area united by a relaxed feel and a unique approach to alternative lifestyles. Copenhagen being the capital with a history of a thousand years, castles and palaces, and Malmö being the cosy and quieter retreat on the Swedish side of the Sound.

Gay History

Both Copenhagen and Malmö are cities with large and varied LGBT communities and a glorious gay history:

• - The first gay bar Centralhjørnet, in Copenhagen over 80 years ago and it is still a very popular place to go.
• - LBL, the National Association for Gay and Lesbians in Denmark was founded in 1948, as the second of its kind in the world.
• - In 1952 Sweden had its National Association for Gay and Lesbians
• - In 1972 Sweden, as first country in the world, gives medical and judicial possibility for transsexuals and intersexuals to perform a sex change.
• - In 1989 Denmark was the first country in the world to recognize ‘Registered Partnership' between same-sex partners
• - In 1999 Denmark made it posible for gay couples to adopt their partners children
• - Since 2003, it is possible for gay couples to adopt on same terms as heterosexual couples in Sweden

Copenhagen/Øresund don´t miss

Visiting TIVOLI Goes Gay, as the world famous amusement park will for the first time celebrate gay pride, opening the Pride Week 2008 on 10 August

Taking part in Copenhagen Pride 2008 - A whole week of parties, political discussions and a ‘Pride Village' at Copenhagen City Hall Square. The culmination will be the big parade on 16 August winding its way through central Copenhagen.

CGLFF Copenhagen Gay and Lesbian Film Festival - actually one of the largest LGBT festivals in Europe and with very high artistic aspirations. Please note that all movies are shown in original language with mainly English translation. 17 - 26 October 2008 - check www.cglff.dk for details.

Malmö Pride takes place during the last week in September, spectators line the parade route as gays and lesbians strut their stuff through the streets of Malmö, jamming the traffic with floats, rainbow flags, screaming queens and leather people.
